Climbing Wall

Our climbing wall is used by the Basingstoke Climbing Club on Thursday evenings between 8.30 - 10.30pm

Basingstoke Climbing Club supports a wide range of climbing and mountaineering activities. Club members go outdoor rock climbing one day of most weekends during the spring, summer and autumn.

Once a month the club goes away climbing for the whole weekend. In addition to the normal club activities, club members get together in groups to organise their own trips and holidays.

Examples of trips in recent years include:

  • Mountaineering and rock climbing in the Alps
  • Climbing Via Ferrata style in the Dolomites (Italian Alps)
  • Trekking in the Himalayas and Patagonia
  • Skiing in the Alps
  • Ski mountaineering in the Alps
  • Ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies
  • Sport climbing in Italy and Spain

At weekends in the winter when the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities, other larger climbing walls in the area are visited; for example Westway, Craggy Island, the Warehouse and Calshot Activity Centre.

The club also organises regular social events.

What are we like?

We are a friendly, supportive bunch of outdoor enthusiasts. We welcome all ages, from eighteen onwards and both sexes.

The club membership comprises of a balance of male and female members. We regret that it is not practical for us to include under eighteens in our activities. We have people in the club climbing most grades of climbs, except for the higher extreme grades, so you don't need a partner or need to be an expert; you will find compatible people to climb with within the club.

The majority of our UK rock climbing activities are traditional style, that is, routes are led on sight with leader placed protection, so the club offers many opportunities to learn or pursue this satisfying style of climbing.

How can you join in?

Whether you are an experienced climber who has moved into the area or a novice, contact Alan Veal on 01256 478225 for more details before coming along to the Basingstoke Sports Centre wall.

If you are inexperienced or your skills are rusty we will ask you to either attend a professional beginners course run at Basingstoke Sports Centre or one of the other walls in the area to learn the basics.
